It sounds interesting. I've always wanted to try my hand at a big race. The pot is expensive but I understand your reasoning on that. If I may make a few comments/suggestions/questions though.
- Combat: Is it allowed? If my ship/pod is destroyed can I come back with another one? Can my corpmate or pirate alt or random stranger suicide gank the competition (assuming they can catch/find them)
- Clones: If I have a conveniently placed jump clone, can I use it to cut off part of the route once? Same with a normal clone?
- I think it would make things more interesting if the shortest route between waypoints was through low/null sec space, and a longer route though high sec. Not all the time, but for a few jumps it would be fun. Means you can wait for someone or set up a gatecamp without getting concorded.
- Could you set up a chat channel for the race. You can keep running commentary for the spectators. The pilots can taunt each other. AND whenever someone reaches a waypoint you can have the checkpoint pilot report: "pilot X has just reached checkpoint 3". Adds to the tension.
If you notice, the points above could really tip the scales in your favor, especially if you know the route in advance. Even just a single waypoint. Call me paranoid, but how can we be assured that the information won't leak before hand? (Or if I'm really paranoid, that there won't be an 'inside' racer who knows this ahead of time).
In light of that I would make one other, rather large, suggestion. A few days prior to the race, release the full set of waypoints to all of the participants. Then no one can have an advantage. For even more interesting racing, let them run the waypoints in any order as long as they finish in the last system after having passed through all waypoints.
Now you could just have the autopilot optimize the route, but if you allow clone jumping/podding into the mix...... things can get interesting indeed. Especially if it really becomes a no-holds-bared race and spectators can fight if they want (not that you could really stop them anyways).
Picture this: *Announcer voice* The pilots are lining up at the start... AND they are OFF! Haha BillyJoe is flying in a pod! Wait wait out of nowhere just jumped in a bunch of tacklers. They are tackling everyone but JimBob who now has an early lead. Everyone else is stuck dead. Now a kestrel just jumped into the system and popped BillyJoe's pod! Concord will make that Kestrel pay. Wait, no concord showing up, it seems the Kestrel pilot is a corpmate of BillyJoe, how strange. By-Veldspar BillyJoe just appeared at waypoint 2 in a fresh new clone. He obviously has an early lead.
As for holding the money, if not a GM there is always Chribba or the like.
